Perfect

Well, this is not what I expected.

Nico actually told me at the end of our dispute that he didn’t want me to contact him again.

For context — the last time I saw him, he was deeply in debt, owing tens of thousands of euros. His social security benefits were about to end (in France, unemployment aid only lasts for two years). If he didn’t sell his apartment or his house, he’d have no income at all. On top of that, he was dealing with a lawsuit against the company that fired him. His situation was complicated, but to protect his privacy, I won’t go into the details.

He was struggling — financially and health-wise. But instead of looking for a new job or trying to resolve the lawsuit, what did he do? He got on Grindr and started dating a 19-year-old high school student. I tried my best not to judge, but it’s hard when you’re watching someone self-destruct right in front of you.

Joe even did him a favor by getting him an appointment with a new lawyer. But Nico didn’t show up. When Joe asked why, he said he “didn’t have time.”
Well… apparently, he did have plenty of time to cruise on Grindr. That’s why I was so mad.

Looking back, maybe I could have chosen my words differently. I thought he needed a kick in the butt, but… maybe that wasn’t what he needed at all. Either way, I respected his decision and haven’t contacted him since. The last I heard about Nico was through Joe.

Joe stopped by to see him one day after work. They went to McDonald’s and had a coffee. Joe said they didn’t talk much, and that Nico didn’t look well. He didn’t mention me at all during their conversation.

There was one small positive thing, though — at the end, Nico told Joe to say hello to me.

I guess that’s the end of the story with Nico. He won’t appear in my comics again, because he’s no longer in our lives. I know all the “right” things to do — to forgive, to move on, to be the bigger person. But I just can’t.
He wanted me to leave him alone, and that’s exactly what I’ll do. He’ll get what his heart desired — I’ll leave him alone.
